Coach-house and Stables at Peniarth Uchaf

The Coach-house and Stables at Peniarth Uchaf is a 19th-century building constructed from local course stone and topped with slate roofs. It features a long and high central range that ends in tall pavilions, each housing a coach-house with a pair of tall timber battened doors set within a carefully crafted 3-centred arch made of cut radial voussoirs. Above each carriage arch, there is a large oculus with cross glazing bars. The central range is flush and has a similar, but lower, 3-centred arch over an open lobby, which provides access to the stables on either side and further doors at the back leading to a tack room. Each stable is illuminated by two Diocletian windows in the front wall. Above the stables, accessible via an external stone stair at the right end, there is a loft with three large oculi. A later lean-to has been added at the rear. The building features wide projecting eaves and verges, with exposed plates and purlin ends, along with slender bargeboards. At the time of the survey, the building was noted to be in poor condition.

Inside, each stable is divided into two stalls by a matchboarded timber and rail partition. The ceilings are plastered, and the floors are made of drained brick. There are cast iron wall-hung mangers at the back of each stable.
