Description

Ffridd-Ddu is a late 16th century to early 17th century L-shaped farmhouse with a cross-passage plan. It is built of rubble and has a medium-pitched slate roof. The farmhouse features a large end chimney on the right with weather-coursing and a moulded capping, as well as a shorter chimney on the lower reargabled wing, which retains its rubble gable parapet. To the left of the main facade is a raised rubble terrace. The off-centre entrance on the left has a heavy pegged oak doorcase and a later boarded door, topped by a projecting stone lintel. In front of the entrance are a series of rough stone steps. To the left of the entrance is a small square light with an original wooden surround and plain glazing. To the right of the entrance is a 19th century six-pane fixed window with a similar lintel. Above are two large rubble gabled dormers featuring 20th century eight-pane casements. There is a ruinous addition to the right. At the rear, there is an opposing entrance with a wide, recessed boarded door and flanking four-pane windows, with the right window being smaller. Above this entrance is a modern flat-roofed dormer that is out of character with the rest of the building. Although not inspected during the survey in April 1995, it is believed that a contemporary post-and-panel screen and a corkscrew stair beside the fireplace still exist.
