Description

Dylasau Isaf is a two-storey farmhouse dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, comprising two blocks set corner-to-corner. The main block, facing southeast, was built in the 17th century and was initially L-shaped; a later, 19th-century infill closes the southwest angle. An earlier block, at a right angle in the northeast corner, is likely from the 16th century and was converted for agricultural use in the 19th century.

The earlier block is constructed from heavy slate slabs, some up to 1.2 metres long, and some have an inscribed ‘T’, possibly a mason’s mark. It has a roof of thick slates. The southeast gable end features a vertically-proportioned first-floor window and a blocked, broad attic window. A doorway on the ground floor was originally a window. The southwest elevation has a stone stair with a doorway beneath, the stair protected by a parapet with flat coping stones. At the head of the stair, a first-floor doorway (formerly a window) is present with a cambered head. The northwest gable end has a tall, square stone chimney that steps back at the junction with the main block, and a window (formerly an entrance doorway) is situated in the angle.

The main block is built in roughly coursed rubble with a modern slate roof, topped with end chimneys. The windows are 19th or 20th-century casements with deep stone lintels. There are three windows to the first floor and one to each side of the doorway on the ground floor. The window to the left of the present door was originally a doorway, with a segmental-shaped stone lintel. A further vertically-proportioned window is to the left, beneath a simpler stone lintel. A possible datestone near the lintel bears the inscription "1620."

To the left of the main house, a single-storey lean-to has been added in matching materials in the 19th century, featuring a broad doorway with a stone lintel. The northeast gable end has a single ground-floor window. To the right, a wing has 19th-century windows with deep stone lintels on each floor. The northwest gable of the wing has a small, square ground-floor window and a square chimney supported on high, shallow corbels. The angle between the wings is filled with a lean-to structure in similar materials.

Inside the 16th-century block, stop-chamfered beams and joists are visible on both floors. Each floor has a fireplace in the northwest wall, also with stop-chamfered timber lintels. On the upper floor, to the right of the northeast wall, there is a blocked 16th or 17th-century window with oak unglazed and two diagonally set square mullions. The 17th-century block has exposed chamfered beams, though ground-floor partitions are later. An inglenook fireplace is in the southwest wall, featuring a curved wooden lintel and a window to the right. The kitchen fireplace has a stop-chamfered beam on corbels with a secondary inscription "T P Esqr 1735" in fine lettering, and a winding stone stair is located to the left. The first floor of the northwest wing features a 17th-century in-and-out partition. The original roof structure remains.
