Description

Rhowniar Outward Bound Centre is a two-storey building with rendered walls and a slate roof laid to diminishing courses. The entrance faces roughly southwest and features a two-storey gabled porch. This porch has a 12-pane sash window on the first floor, a doorway with an exposed stone architrave, and a 12-pane sash window on the side. The porch is flanked by projecting chimneys with twin stacks.

To the right of the porch, there is a slate-hung gablet with a 12-pane sash window on each floor. The left side has a similar arrangement, but the windows are positioned closer to the porch. Beyond the porch, there is a two-storey link to a service block, which has a 12-pane sash window on the first floor and a small modern window on the ground floor. The service block features two windows facing the house and a gabled end with large small-pane sash windows.

The main front of the building faces a garden and includes large projecting gabled blocks at each end, each with two-light slits at the apex and a single 12-pane sash window on the first floor. There are two similar windows on the ground floor. Between the large gables, the central block has two small dormers with slate-hung gables and two 12-pane sash windows set at the eaves. On the ground floor, there are two tall windows and a door to the left, with a sundial above the central window. To the right, there is a lower conservatory block where the roof sweeps down to first-floor level, featuring two small gabled dormers with small-pane casement windows. The ground floor has full-height small-pane glazing and doors.

Attached to the conservatory block is a modern accommodation block for the Outward Bound Centre, which is not included in the listing. The building has undergone alterations for use as an Outward Bound centre, with a ground floor corridor and rooms at the front featuring oak panelling, simple plasterwork, and fireplaces. On the first floor, the 'Blue Room' has a barrel-vaulted ceiling.
