Description
The Tywyn & District War Memorial Hospital is a late Arts-and-Crafts style hospital, likely dating to the early 20th century. It is constructed of whitened roughcast with a graded slate roof, brick stacks, and a ridge louvre. Most windows have been replaced. The building comprises a long, single-storey block with a cranked plan and rear wings.
At the left end of the front block is a former house, distinguished by a mansard roof and a central brick chimney. The central entrance is framed by a shallow segmental arch and features a half-lit panel door under a segmental head. This is flanked by pairs of windows, and above are two raked roof dormers with wider windows. To the right of the house is an archway on the right side, followed by a window. An unusual porch with a stepped gable topped by a ball finial, octagonal buttresses, a round arch with a keystone, and a round-headed doorway with an overlight incorporating double-leaf doors and small-pane glazing to the upper panels is then encountered. Further along are two square windows, followed by a simple full-height buttress and six taller windows. From this point the plan angles slightly forward. A gabled porch features splayed buttresses, a round arch with a triple keystone, and a stone tablet inscribed 'Towyn Cottage Hospital'. Inside the porch, double half-glazed doors are accompanied by half-glazed side panels and an overlight. The porch is flanked by original round-headed windows with stained glass heads and two-light small-pane casements. To the right of the porch are three more windows, the end one of which is under a canopy attached to a later 20th-century extension, which incorporates a basement storey due to the falling ground level.
The rear elevations are largely of whitened brick with replacement windows. A one-and-a-half-storey rear wing has a segmental-headed stair window and two hipped roof dormers with two-light small-pane windows. This wing includes a lower gabled projection and a flat-roofed corridor link to service buildings. To the right is a brick wing extended in the later 20th century. Further to the left is a two-storey wing at a splayed angle, with further extensions beyond.
The entrance lobby features a plastered groin vault in its central bay, while the side bays contain fitted wooden benches. A classical wooden war memorial is located in the left-hand bay, alongside a fireplace. A 1939-45 war memorial depicting a bronze infantryman in high relief is set into the rear wall. To the right are bronze plaques in a classical wooden frame, commemorating legacies to the hospital between 1924 and 1946. A foundation tablet, laid by Mrs Lloyd-George, wife of the prime minister, in 1920 is set into the right side wall. Double half-glazed panel doors lead to an axial corridor, opposite which is an open-well stair with moulded newels and turned balusters. Other areas within the hospital have been modernised.
