Description
1 Lion Yard consists of single-storey picturesque vernacular cottages, with a basement on the right. The cottages are built from rubble masonry with a widely slobbered mortar finish, and the side and rear are whitewashed. They feature a steeply pitched slate roof with plain eaves and close verges, along with three stone stacks and water tabling.
The cottage on the left has three windows, each with 12-pane sash windows and stone lintels. The doorway is located between the second and third windows, featuring a diamond-glazed rectangular fanlight above a plank door. A stone staircase with sidewalls winds down to the street from the front right.
The cottage on the right has one window, which is a 16-pane sash window with a stone lintel. To the left is a 6-foot deep narrow panel 19th-century door, also with a stone lintel. A stone staircase winds down to the street alongside the staircase of the other cottage. There is a modern doorway to the basement on the right.
On the left gable end, there is a loft window. At ground level, there is a window and doorway to the basement, both with stone lintels and modern fittings. The smaller cottage has an outshot at the rear with a 16-pane sash window set under the eaves, while the other cottage features a modern multipaned casement window at the rear and a modern window to the basement, also with a stone lintel.
