Description
The Dower House at Bryn Mawr is a single-storey, lofted building, also known as Tyddyn-y-Traian (Jointure-House), which is currently used for agricultural purposes. Originally, it had a direct entry with a hall to the south and service rooms to the north. The structure is built from coursed rubble masonry with a boulder foundation and features a steeply pitched quarry slate roof, a simple ovolo eaves cornice, and close verges. The stack has been removed from the right end.
The front has a window to the left and doorways in the centre and to the right, with the right doorway having formerly been a window. It has plank doors and stone lintels. There is a blocked loft window on the right side of the north gable end. On the rear elevation, there is a window to the left that is partly blocked, also with a stone lintel.
Adjoining to the south is a late 19th-century, three-bay cowhouse constructed from rubble masonry and topped with a slate roof. It has a central doorway with a doorhead at the eaves and a plank split door. Ventilation slits are located in the end bay, and there is a pitching door on the gable end. Inside, there are tie beam and collar beam trusses that are bolted.
The interior features stop-chamfered transverse ceiling beams and a broad bressumer with broach stops to the chamfer. A rubble cross wall has been inserted to the south of the original entry, and there is a small fireplace in the loft. The roof structure includes two through purlin collared trusses with original purlins.
