Description
Old Cottage in the grounds of Garth is a single-storey, double-fronted cottage constructed from rubble field stone. It features slate-stone lintels and is topped with a renewed slate roof that has coped gables and a stone stack on the left side. The entrance has a boarded door, flanked by wood-framed small-pane windows, with an opening iron-frame light on the right. The rear of the cottage is built into a slope and includes one small blocked window and a blocked former doorway aligned with the front door.
Originally, the interior was divided into two units, possibly with a crog loft, but it is now undivided. The walls are limewashed, and some flagstones are visible on the floor. Above the fireplace, there are remains of a plastered fireplace hood, although only the wickerwork frame remains, and it is in poor condition. To the right of the fireplace is a bread oven. The collar-beam roof truss dates from the late 19th century or early 20th century and is made of machine-sawn timber. The adjacent Garth House is not of special architectural or historic interest.
