Description
The agricultural range at Llwyn Hwlcyn is a linear structure built roughly in the 19th century, consisting of a threshing barn, cowhouse, and lofted stable, with a lean-to addition along the rear (north) lateral wall under a catslide roof. The building is constructed of rubble masonry, featuring a roof of small old slates with a tiled ridge and stone copings at the eastern gable for the stable and cowhouse. The roof of the threshing barn is lower and has been re-slated in the 20th century, with stone copings at the western gable.
At the left (west) end of the range, the threshing barn has central opposing doors flanked by ventilation slits, along with three additional ventilation slits in the western gable wall. Access to the lean-to addition at the rear is through a doorway in the western wall. To the right, the cowhouse features two doorways, with the leftmost doorway having two ventilation slits between it and the right-hand doorway, plus another ventilation slit at the right end. The stable has a doorway offset to the left (west) end and a window to the right; the stable door is marked with simple graffiti sketches that appear to be quite old, though no dates are provided. Access to the roof is gained via an external flight of stone steps leading to a doorway in the eastern gable.
Inside, the stable contains three stalls on the right (east) side, separated by timber partitions, with slate troughs and mangers along the eastern wall. The loft has been modernized, and the pitching hole from the loft has been blocked. The cowhouse features a three-bay roof supported by collared trusses and two massive chamfered tie beams, with a central timber hayrack positioned over a stone trough and a ventilation slit in the apex of the western gable. The threshing barn also has a three-bay roof with angled struts.
