Description
The bark mill at Argoed is a small rural building that served as a bark mill and tannery. It dates back to an unspecified period and features a single-storey structure aligned roughly north-south, with a smaller range set at a lower level at the front southeast corner, creating an L-shaped plan. The building is constructed from roughly coursed rubble masonry, with large stones used for the quoins and lintels. The roof is covered with small slates and has stone copings on the gables of the main range.
The main elevations of the building face the farmyard and farmhouse to the east. There is a central doorway in the north-south range and an additional doorway located towards the north end of the east gable of the lower range. On the rear (west) wall of the north-south range, there is a single window opening that is unglazed.
While the interior of the bark mill could not be inspected during the survey, a report in the Journal of the Merioneth Historical and Record Society from 1990-93 notes that the mill wheel remains in place, as confirmed by the current owner.
