Description

The stable and cartshed range at Argoed is a partially lofted stable block constructed of rubble masonry. The main front features roughly coursed dressed masonry, with large dressed stones used as quoins and lintels, while the other walls are made of boulder construction with packing stones. It has a slate roof with a tiled ridge and slate copings, along with small rooflights in the rear (east) pitch. The principal elevation faces the old farmhouse and includes a doorway offset to the left (north) end of the range, flanked by windows with slate sills. The left window has a 6-pane light, while the right window features small paned windows in the upper part and remnants of a hit-and-miss ventilator in the lower section. Access to the partial loft was originally through a pitching hole in the south gable apex, which is now partially blocked and contains a 6-paned fixed light; a later opening has been added to the north gable, which features a 2-light window.

The cartshed addition at the rear has rubble-built side walls, with a small casement window in the north wall. The rear wall includes wide cart bay openings supported by slate and timber uprights. There is a small 20th-century lean-to at the north gable, which is rendered, likely over brick walling, and has a roof made of profiled asbestos material. A doorway is located in the north wall, accompanied by a window to the right and another window in the east wall.

Inside the stables, there are loose boxes at the north end and two stalls at the rear, with a stone trough along the back wall. An enclosed store or tack room is situated at the south end, beneath a partial loft that was previously accessed through the pitching hole in the south gable apex.
