Description

The Toll House, which includes the Pilot House, is a three-storey building constructed partly of weather-boarded, timber-framed materials. It features jettied upper storeys and has a rendered, stepped gable chimney on the left side. The ground floor displays a bowed, small-pane shop window in a Georgian style, flanked by two 6-pane glazed doors. Above this, there is an iron-railed balcony on the first floor, with 16-pane French windows in the centre. The second floor has a paired 8-pane casement window, complete with external slatted shutters.

On the left-hand (northwest) corner, there is a rendered, turret-like projection at ground level, topped with a railed semi-circular platform. This platform holds a polychromed life-sized statue of St. Peter in the act of preaching, sheltered by a sloped octagonal canopy. A painted wrought-iron hanging sign is displayed at the front. Between the turret and the projecting chimney breast on the gable end, there is a shelter with a lean-to roof. The chimney features an arched, small-pane window on the ground floor, with an applied relief plaque above it. To the left of the chimney, a flight of steps with a parapet rises in an L-shape to a tall arched entrance, which has a lower arched, boarded door. A wide arch connects the Toll House to the Bridge House beyond.

At the rear, the Pilot House adjoins the Toll House. This is a two-storey structure, also weather-boarded, with wide, horizontal, metal-framed windows on both floors that face out across the estuary.
