Description
The Navigation Control Centre, formerly known as the Pilot House, dates from around 1800 and features later additions. This distinctive octagonal, two-storey building is located prominently at the harbour peninsula and includes a later, splayed, slated three-stage control tower on the roof. The structure is built of harled rubble with an ashlar base course, eaves course, dressings, and angle quoins.
On the principal (west) elevation, there are steps leading to a panelled timber door topped with a rectangular fanlight. Above this, an opening extends to the eaves level, featuring a clock face in the upper part and a glazed section below with frosted glass and glazing bars. The rear (east) elevation displays an irregular glazing pattern, and a metal ladder leads to a narrow metal observation platform at the second stage. The top stage has multi-pane glazing. Additionally, there is a harled, flat-roofed addition on the first floor of the south elevation, supported by thin piloti. Fixed-pane windows are present on both the ground and first floors.
