Description

Bryniau is a linear range of single-storey vernacular buildings located down-slope, forming a homestead that includes a house and byre. At the upper southwest end is the croglofft cottage, which has a small kitchen addition to the left. To the right is the former byre, which has a small addition on the right end that may have once served as a brewhouse. The buildings are constructed of rubble stone, with the cottage and kitchen whitewashed. The roofs were originally thatched, with some thatch still visible beneath the current corrugated metal sheet cladding. There is a brick chimney situated between the cottage and the kitchen.

The house features a boarded door positioned right of centre, flanked by 16-pane hornless sash windows on each side. The kitchen to the left has a 9-pane swivel window and an off-centre stable door. The byre, likely once whitewashed, now shows exposed stone. It has a stable door right of centre, with a 16-pane sash window to the left and a 12-pane sash window to the right. The addition on the right includes a stable door on the extreme left and a window with 6 panes above a slatted lower half, with brick jambs.

Inside, the kitchen has two bays open to the roof, featuring a single rustic larch collared truss. There is a ledged door with bead-mouldings on the end wall of the cottage. The cottage itself has a three-bay roof with larch pegged collar-trusses. The upper part of the cottage has an open roof and an ingle-nook with a cambered oak bressumer. The lower part contains a parlour with a raised former croglofft above. The rustic polled roof fabric is partially exposed over the croglofft. The former byre and its addition have been converted internally to provide domestic accommodation.
