Description
Ty'n Cwm is a former cottage that has been converted into an outbuilding and is the central unit of a group of three buildings. These buildings are positioned at right angles to the lane that runs along the valley and form a continuous line downhill towards the river. The structure consists of a two-storey house located uphill, with the earlier cottage at the center. The cottage is made of whitewashed rubble stone and features a corrugated iron roof over straw thatch, with an ivy-clad stack at the downhill end. It has a front elevation with a window, door, and another window, as well as a small window at the rear, all of which have timber lintels.
At the downhill end of the cottage is a small rubble stone byre with a zinc roof (over thatch) and one door. The interior of the cottage has a three-bay layout, featuring two pegged collar-trusses with scarfed feet, double purlins, and rafters made from cleft branches resting directly on the stone walls. The under-thatch is composed of gorse. The front doorway has a corresponding doorway in the rear wall, which is now blocked. At the downhill end, there is a fine wicker chimney-hood that is plastered and whitewashed, with curved angles and resting on a timber beam leading to a stub wall on the right. The entrance and lower kitchen have high-quality cobbled floors, and there is a plank partition separating the entrance from the lower room. Two beams from the former loft floor remain.
The byre features a roof supported by nine horizontal poles and has straw rope under-thatch, along with four tie stalls for cattle.
