Description
Bwlch-y-garreg is a cottage built from rubble stone, which was once whitewashed. It features a corrugated iron roof that replaced small slates, as seen in a photograph from 1985. The cottage has a prominent square end stack on the right, made of stone with dripstones and a pyramidal capping. It is a single-storey, double-fronted building with two-pane casements on either side of the door; the left casement is larger, and the entire facade is offset to the left. The cottage stands on very large boulder footings and has a small window at the rear leading to a scullery.
To the right of the cottage is a 19th-century added byre, also constructed from rubble stone and topped with a corrugated iron roof. This byre has a small window on the left and a door on the right, and its roof is lower than that of the house. There is a one-bay addition on the right end with a cobble floor.
The interior of the cottage has seen little alteration but is in a state of decay. The kitchen on the right is open to the roof and features a large fireplace with a beam dated 1818, along with an inserted oven and grate. To the left of the fireplace is a cupboard. A partition made of wide boards, with two doors, separates the entry area; one door led to a bedroom with a box bed that is now gone, and the other door led to a narrow scullery, with the partition between the bedroom and scullery having been removed. Above the left part of the cottage is a croglofft, which is accessed by a ladder, although the supporting cross beam is broken.
