Description

Richards Newsagents is a pair of shops with dwellings above, forming a terrace, located at 5-6 Castle Square. The building features a roughcast front and slate roofs, with No 5 having a replaced slate roof while No 6 retains its original graded slates. It stands three storeys tall, with each storey consisting of a single bay. The middle and upper storeys are adorned with rusticated end pilaster strips, a moulded upper sill band, and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The windows on these storeys are tripartite 4-pane sashes set between broad colonnettes with crocket capitals. The middle storey windows have architraves with blind segmental arches.

On the lower storey, No 6 features an early 20th-century shop front, which includes a fascia with end brackets on plain pilasters, a replaced door, and a 2-light shop window with turned wood mullions and a transom. No 5 has a late 20th-century front. Additionally, wings have been added to the rear of the building.
