Description
7-8 Castle Square is a pair of shops with dwellings above, forming part of a terrace. The buildings are three storeys high and each has a single bay. The front is finished in scribed roughcast, and the roofs are made of slate with brick end stacks. Number 7 has a replaced slate roof on a dentilled eaves cornice, while Number 8 retains a graded slate roof on a moulded cornice. The original three-bay structure is still visible in the middle and upper storeys. The central bay of the original building has blocked windows with chamfered reveals that span both properties. The right-hand bay (Number 8) features horned sash windows in chamfered surrounds, with 12 panes in the middle storey and 9 panes in the upper storey. In the left-hand bay (Number 7), there are recently inserted tripartite 4-pane sash windows on each storey. Number 8 retains elements of an early 20th-century shop front, including panelled pilasters and fascia end panels, although the lower storey has been remodelled with a late 20th-century shop front. Number 7 also has a late 20th-century shop front on the lower storey.
