Description
12-14 Castle Square (Paternoster Buildings) Simplified Baroque style shops with dwellings above, of 3 storeys and attic, on a corner site with splayed angle. Roughcast walls are painted cream, the slate roof is hipped to the R, and has 3 roughcast stacks. Facing Castle Square are 3 paired bays defined by rusticated pilasters in the lower storey and full-height Corinthian pilasters to middle and upper storeys. A broad entablature below the eaves has 'Paternoster Buildings' in raised letters. The middle- and upper-storey windows have architraves. In the L-hand bay (No 12) are renewed 4-pane sashes; in the central bay (No 13) are 4-pane sashes, while in the R-hand bay (No 14) are windows replaced in original openings. The central and L-hand bays also each have 2 segmental-headed roof dormers incorporating opening lights. The L and R-hand bays have late C20 shop fronts. The central bay (No 13) shop front comprises half-glazed panelled doors R and L, window with glazing bars and round vents to the stall board. The fascia is replaced.
Further R is a narrower single-window splayed corner bay and then a bay facing Bridge Street with replaced tripartite windows, with pilasters similar to the Castle Square elevation. To the rear is a single bay facing Lon Crwyn, terminating with a pilaster similar to the main elevations. Beyond, the rear is 5-window, with openings mostly infilled.
