Description

The Former Steward's House at Coed-y-Bedo is a small rectangular cottage dating from the 18th century. It is a single-storey building with a sleeping loft, constructed from local rubble with remnants of external limewashing. The cottage features a slate roof with a slab-coped and kneelered gable parapet at the lower end, which includes a reduced end chimney.

On the northeast side, there is a near-central entrance with an original pegged frame, although the door is missing. The southwest side has two original small window openings; the left window has a 19th-century two-pane casement. At the upper northwest gable end, there is a 19th-century external stone stair that provides access to an upper entrance, which has a boarded door and pegged frame. Attached to the lower southeast end is a later single-storey rubble addition with a steeply-pitched corrugated iron roof. This addition has an entrance on the northeast side and a window with plain, modern glazing on the gable.

Inside, the cottage features a beamed ceiling with a stopped-chamfered main beam and plain joists. Evidence of mortising on the underside of the beam indicates that there was originally a post-and-panel partition that divided the ground floor into a 'hall' on the left and an unheated end room or parlour on the right. The hall fireplace has a rough chamfered bressummer, which incorporates a 19th-century bread oven.
