Description
The Barmouth Railway Bridge is a single-track railway viaduct, measuring 751 yards long, built in 1899. It features 113 groups of timber supports known as pile bents and includes a 5-span steel section with a swing bridge at the northern end, towards Barmouth. The northern shore has a rubble-faced abutment, while the southern end is constructed from concrete. The bridge has a low trabeated structure with longitudinal timbers that support the main timber deck and rails. Cross-braced timber piles with raking shores are supported by concrete foundations. The opening section consists of strapped steel cylinders with twin bow-trussed girders tied over the track, along with twin column supports that have bulbous caps, which are wider at the opening piers. The metal deck is reinforced with latticework braces. Additionally, there is a lower boarded pedestrian walkway with modern railing on the upstream side, which was added between 1868 and 1879.
