Description

The Old School is a linear schoolroom building, asymmetrically planned, dating from the 19th century. It features two gabled wings that are advanced to the southeast, with a lean-to porch entrance situated between them and a canted bay at the northeast gable end. The exterior is constructed of granite rubble with limestone dressings, topped by a modern slate roof that has stone copings and a bellcote along the ridge of the advanced wing on the right (northeast). The building also has rendered stacks with ashlar scoring, including a ridge stack offset to the northeast and a central stack to the right (northeast) of the rear entrance.

The principal elevation faces southeast, with the gabled wings offset to the left. Each wing has paired gable apex windows, with the left wing featuring a 3-light ground floor window and the right wing having three single windows that are modern replacements. Between the advanced wings, there is a glazed porch, a raking half dormer above, and a paired ground floor window to the right end. A doorway is located on the northeast side of the right advanced wing, while the northeast gable has a ground floor canted bay window with a paired window above, flanked by single windows. The rear (northwest) elevation has its doorway offset to the left, flanked by single windows and a 3-light window to the right, above which is a band of single windows that break the eaves lines, along with a further narrow ground floor window to the right. The original windows were slightly recessed leaded casements with 1, 2, or 3 lights, although many have been replaced with modern PVCu versions. The entrances feature half-glazed doors.
