Description
The Old Rectory is a Georgian-style building dating from the 18th century. It is a two-storey structure with a three-window front and a one-window extension to the northwest, along with a shorter, two-storey service wing at the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The building is constructed from rubble masonry, with the main house and northwest extension rendered. It has a slate roof featuring a crested ridge, hipped on the southeast side and gabled on the northwest side. The end chimneys are rectangular and rendered, with a ridge stack. The service wing has a hipped roof covered with small, old slates and a tall, rendered ridge stack positioned towards the south end.
The principal elevation faces northeast, showcasing the original house on the left with a three-window range. This includes a central, round-headed, glazed doorway with an ornamental fanlight, flanked by 16-pane sash windows. The northwest addition features a half-glazed doorway to the left and a canted ground floor bay to the right, with a paired small-paned sash window above. The rear of the building has scattered fenestration, including tall, narrow windows that illuminate the hallway between the original and later sections. The service wing also displays scattered fenestration with varying sizes of windows, most of which are small-paned sashes. The entrance is through a doorway offset to the north end of the west wall, which has lean-tos at the south end.
Internally, the building was originally designed with the principal rooms at the front and the service wing at the back, with a staircase situated between them. The ground floor rooms maintain full-height panelled reveals, an arched doorway with a panelled soffit and shutters, while the living room features a moulded cornice and picture rails. The first-floor rooms include original six-panel doors, with some rooms showcasing original cast-iron fireplaces. The dog-leg staircase is adorned with stick balusters and octagonal newels.
