Description

St Michael's Roman Catholic Church, designed by Gillespie Kidd and Coia in 1951, is a very long church located on Cardross Road in Dumbarton. It features an aisle to the south and a tower at the southwest corner. The exterior is constructed of red facing brick with concrete dressings and has a low pitched copper roof. The body of the church is illuminated at the upper level by eleven diamond-shaped clerestory windows on the north side, while the lower level has rectangular windows. At the east end, there are tall multi-paned windows flanking the altar, and there is no fenestration in the east gable. The west end features a large multipaned window with a flat pointed head, which is divided horizontally by a concrete awning over the entrance, along with a smaller multi-paned window to the left. The gabled tower has solid east and west gables, with louvred belfry openings on the north and south sides, and is recessed with very large multipane glazed windows that protect a rood panel by Jack Mortimer. Above the belfry, there are pierced panels.

Entrances are accessed from a brick platform that has decorative iron railings wrapping around the southwest angle. The aisle is divided into three sections. The west section includes an entrance bay with a double door and a door with a multipane glazed tripartite window in the center. There are four pairs of confessionals with paired small rectangular windows, and a block with five larger square windows.

The interior has not been seen.
