Description
Holy Family Roman Catholic Church and Presbytery, located at 2 Parkhill Avenue in Port Glasgow, was designed by Gillespie Kidd and Coia between 1946 and 1959. This large church, which includes an adjoining presbytery to the north, is set on a steeply sloping site and constructed from yellowish red facing brick with copper roofs.
The church has a rectangular plan and features a low-pitched roof, divided into nine bays by plain pilasters that extend to the eaves as timber mullions. Each bay contains tripartite clerestory windows positioned below the eaves, while the eastern end bay has set-back glazing. To the south, there is a single-storey flat-roofed aisle with continuous glazing at the eaves and two wooden double doors. At the northern side, the west end features a severely plain bell tower with an open top stage that leads into the tower stair hall and a stair tower, which connects to the church via a two-level glazed corridor.
An iron cross is located at the apex of the windowless west gable of the church. The northern elevation of the church includes a bracketed vertical boarded timber flat-roofed cantilevered projection that spans three of the church bays, adorned with nine narrow windows with mullions towards the bottom.
The interior has not been seen.
The presbytery is a two-storey building with a basement, rectangular in shape and consisting of eight bays. It features a cantilevered glazed rectangular bay at the ground floor level on the northern side. The basement is a full storey on the northern side, with narrow horizontal windows. There is also a glazed corridor leading to the church.
