Description
Braehead Cottages, located at 22 Cardross Road in Dumbarton, were designed by architect Charles Ross of Greenlaw in the late 18th century. These are symmetrically planned single-storey farm cottages built in a Gothick style. Originally, there were three cottages arranged in a U-plan, but now there are two parallel cottages, with only the facade of the central cottage remaining.
The cottages are constructed from limewashed rubble and each features three bays with gables facing the road. Each cottage has a central ogival-headed doorway with columned jambs, flanked by pointed windows that have blocked label stops. Above the string course, there are two incised crosses beside a blocked quatrefoil in the gable head. The original gable crenellations have been removed from No. 22. The corners of the cottages are adorned with banded clustered columns, and the gables are topped with pinnacles. The roofs are slated. The former central cottage, which is now just a screen wall, also had three bays and was broader but similarly designed.
