Description

The Technical Block at Keil School on Helenslee Road in Kirktonhill, Dumbarton, was designed by architect John Honeyman and is dated 1865, as noted on the rainwater head. Originally a stable block, this building features a Gothick style with stugged ashlar coursers and polished dressings. It consists mainly of two single-storey wings with lofts, arranged in an L-plan that forms a churchyard.

The courtyard elevations have a continuous hood-mould raised over the ground floor openings. The west wing is asymmetrical, featuring two 2-centred-arched cart openings that have been altered to windows, flanked by doors and one outer window. Above the hood-mould, there are diminutive paired lancets. A loft door with a dovecot is set in an arched moulding within a gabled dormer head, and there is a corbelled oriel supported on a shaft with cusped lights on the south gable.

The north wing includes a former door that has been converted into a window, flanked by lancets, all recessed in arcaded pointed panels. The eaves are moulded, and there is a conical-roofed, two-storey angle tower on the right, which features a square-headed roll-moulded door and is banded at the eaves level, with a clock and two small lights above. The building also has some flat-roofed six-pane dormers and crow-stepped gables throughout, with slated roofs. Each gable has a small lean-to and hood-moulded cusped lights, with three gables on the west elevation.

The courtyard is cobbled and partially enclosed to the south and east by a stugged ashlar wall. There are two square polished ashlar gatepiers with gabled caps and cast-iron lamp brackets to the south. A modern extension to the north is not included in the listing.
