Description

The lodge at Levenford House on Helenslee Road in Dumbarton was designed by architect J T Rochead around 1853. It is situated on a steep slope and features a rectangular-plan stable block built below it around 1865. This stable block was joined to the lodge in 1903 by a linking bay designed by John Burnet and Son. The architecture reflects the Scottish Baronial style, characterized by crowstepped gables and dummy gun ports, constructed from squared, stugged, and snecked rubble.

The lodge itself has a square plan and consists of a single storey with an attic, as well as a basement on the south and east sides. A conical-roofed stair turret rises from below basement level at the southeast corner. The north elevation has two bays, featuring a round-headed door set in a gabled shallow porch, with a tripartite window to the left below a single window in the gabled dormer head. The chimney stacks have diamond flues.

The former stables are also single storey with an attic, showcasing gabled dormers along the long east wall, which includes four ventilators. There is a stack with three diamond flues above the wall head gables. The west wall has two wide modern sliding doors, while the north gable features a lintelled garage opening and a heavy stone apex finial. The linking bay connects to the basement level of the lodge.
