Description

Dumbarton Bridge, located over the River Leven on Bridge Street in Dumbarton, was designed by architect John Brown and completed in 1765. The bridge was widened in 1884 with the addition of iron cantilevers, engineered by W R Copeland of Glasgow. In 1933-34, the ironwork was repaired and a concrete balustrade was added, with engineering by Mr. Jeffrey of Dumbarton. The bridge features five segmental arches spanning the river, with rounded cutwaters on both faces that extend to full height as buttresses. It is constructed of ashlar, with voussoirs that are integrated into the spandrels as diagonal masonry.
