Description
The War Memorial on Dochart Road in Killin was sculpted by Alexander Carrick and unveiled on 29th October 1920. It is prominently located at the southern entrance to Killin, near the famous Falls of Dochart. This memorial honors those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and reflects Carrick's typical style. It features a large battered coursed rubble stone base topped by a three-dimensional kilted soldier, fully equipped and holding a slung rifle. Surrounding the memorial is a low stone-walled bench-type enclosure made of post and lintel construction, with pairs of simple rough-hewn square piers that support planters at the West and East, creating entrances. The space is paved with cobbles and pebbles, inscribed with the words, "LEST WE FORGET."
On the South elevation, there is an inscription that reads, "1914-1919 TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF (NAMES) 1939-1945 (NAMES)." Additional names are recorded on panels on the West and East elevations.
The materials used include predominantly pale pink sandstone for the sculpture and base, grey stone for the bench enclosure, and light-colored stone cobbles and pebbles for the enclosure, with the lettering in black.
