Description
The building comprises a circa 1845 house, now divided into two flats known as White House and Breadalbane Cottage, and an adjoining single-storey wing converted into a Masonic Lodge in the early 20th century. The building is faced in white harl and is situated at a crossroads in the village. It retains considerable architectural character, notably in its unusual orientation – the principal three-bay frontage does not face the street, with the gable end instead being given prominence. Gabled dormers are characteristic of local architectural traditions. Local knowledge indicates a possible connection to an earlier sawmill that was previously located nearby.
The east-facing street elevation is divided, with the Masonic Lodge to the left. This section features a three-bay frontage, the central bay’s window being larger than the outer bays. Above this window is a gable projecting through the roofline, bearing an inscribed stone reading ‘LODGE BREADALBANE ST FILLANS No 815 A.D 1907’. The entrance to the Lodge is located at the rear, within a monopitch section. To the right of the Lodge is the divided house, two bays wide, with a gabled bay at the far right and another bay featuring a gabled dormer breaking the eaves. The north elevation of the house has three bays, each with a corresponding gabled dormer breaking the roofline, and a central entrance. A separate entrance serves the upper flat, situated at the rear.
The house has a gable stack where it connects to the Lodge, and another gable stack on the rear elevation. The Lodge’s interior is timber-lined and was recently refurbished in 2004 following the discovery of dry rot. Windows in the Lodge are predominantly timber sash and case, with four-pane and two-pane over four-pane glazing. The house has non-traditional replacement windows.
The building is part of a group value context with Birchbank, Glengarry, Ashlea, and Upper Ashlea. The Earl of Breadalbane donated the Lodge to the Masons.
