Description

Probably dating from the later 18th century, Birchbank is a two-storey, three-bay rubble stone house on Main Street, Killin. It forms part of a terraced group of three houses, alongside Glengarry, Ashlea, and Upper Ashlea, and contributes significantly to the streetscape. Unlike the adjacent properties, Birchbank does not have a projecting gable. It is set back from the street, a feature shared with Glengarry and Ashlea, but uncommon in Killin.

The east-facing street elevation is simple and symmetrical, with a later flat-roofed porch addition. The house has thackstaned gable stacks. The rear elevation features a two-storey projecting wing and a shallow, two-storey, piend-roofed projection forming a re-entrant angle. A semicircular stone detail is located at eaves level on the rear bay to the left, and the ground-floor window below is slightly bowed.

The interior has been largely modernised but retains a large, corniced built-in timber dresser and drawers with brass handles in one downstairs room. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with four panes. The roof is covered in graded slates.

Along the street frontage, a section of dry stone wall with simple, low, square entrance piers defines the boundary.

Birchbank is part of a B-group with the Masonic Lodge, White House, Manse Brae, Breadalbane Cottage, Glengarry, Ashlea, and Upper Ashlea. It was part of the Breadalbane Estate until the 1920s and may have been constructed to house estate workers.
