Description
Ashlea, along with Upper Ashlea (accessed from the rear), is a house likely dating from the later 18th century. It forms part of a terraced group of three houses on Main Street, Killin, and is located near Glengarry and Birchbank (listed separately). This group represents some of the oldest two-storey buildings in the village, retaining a strong traditional architectural character. Ashlea is a two-storey, three-bay house with a white harl exterior and a projecting central gable, which contributes significantly to the streetscape of Killin. The building is set back from the street, a characteristic unusual in Killin but shared with Glengarry and Birchbank.
The principal (East) elevation features a timber boarded entrance door within the projecting gable, topped by a simple two-light rectangular fanlight. Pitched dormers break the eaves of the flanking bays. There are three gable stacks: one on the projecting gable, one to the right, and another adjoining the property to the left. A modern, flat-roofed extension at the rear provides access to Upper Ashlea.
Inside Ashlea, the interior is simple, with four-panel timber doors and a timber chimneypiece featuring a copper Art Nouveau canopy above the grate. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with four panes and horns. The roof is covered with graded slate.
To the East, a truncated wall topped by a hedge runs parallel with the street. To the North, a higher, harled wall separates Ashlea from the adjacent property. At the rear, a building with a predominantly piend roof contains a timber-boarded door leading to a timber-lined interior and a lavatory.
Ashlea was part of the Breadalbane Estate until the 1920s and may have been constructed to house estate workers. It is part of a group of buildings including the Masonic Lodge, White House, Manse Brae, Breadalbane Cottage, Glengarry, and Birchbank.
