Description
The railway viaduct at Killin, built in 1885-6, is the second oldest mass-concrete railway viaduct in Britain, following the Falls of Cruachan viaduct. Standing 37 feet high and 81 yards long, it is a significant landmark in the landscape. The viaduct consists of five skew arches with rubble-faced piers and spandrels, all constructed in concrete. A subtly crenellated stone parapet runs along the top; this has been affected by vandalism and is gradually deteriorating. According to Biddle, the viaduct formed part of a short branch line extending from the main Callander & Oban line, designed to enhance the tourism potential of Killin. It is spectacularly situated and would have afforded rail passengers an exceptional view of the Falls of Dochart and the Clan Macnab Burial Place, which is listed separately. The viaduct’s status was upgraded from category B to A on 19th June, 1996, and is currently owned by the Kinnell Estate.
