Description
Probably dating from the late 18th century, Yellow Cottage served as the estate office and factor's accommodation for Kinnell Estate. In the mid-19th century, alterations were made to bring its appearance in line with the Breadalbane Estate style, including overhanging eaves, harl rendering, and pitched dormers with decorative timber bargeboards. Located at the entrance to Kinnell Estate, the cottage is prominent and imposing, and of importance due to its relationship with other estate buildings, its size, and its traditional vernacular character. It retains its architectural integrity and is a significant landscape feature.
The west elevation of the building, the main side used for estate business and worker wage collection, is two storeys and an attic. It has two ground floor entrances, each with a window to its left, and three regularly spaced windows on the first floor. Two pitched roof dormers are positioned above the outer windows.
The east elevation is symmetrical, with three bays and a single storey and attic. It features a central, part-timber porch and gable stacks.
The interior has been modernised and features a simple timber staircase.
The building is harled and has a graded slate roof. It primarily features timber sash and case windows, most of which are 2-pane over 2-pane.
Yellow Cottage is part of a group of listed buildings including Kinnell’s 1st Set of Urn Gatepiers on West Drive, Kinnell Urn Gatepiers on West Drive, Lion Gatepiers on West Drive, Ball Finial Gatepiers on South Drive, Kinnell House including Walled Garden and Ancillary Buildings, Kinnell House Steading, and Kinnell House Ice House.
The name "Yellow Cottage" may refer to Innis Bhuidhe, the Yellow Island, which the cottage overlooks, rather than the current yellow decorative scheme. Historic records indicate that the cottage was the estate office of Kinnell before 1824.
