Description

The Bridge of Dochart, a notable structure spanning the Falls of Dochart, was built in 1760 and 1831. Constructed of rubble stone, the bridge follows an irregular serpentine shape, adapting to the natural layout of the falls. It features four segmental arches of varying widths and three culverts, ingeniously incorporating the rocks within the falls into its construction. The 1831 work involved repairs to the main span following flood damage. The bridge, along with the nearby Falls of Dochart and the Macnab Burial Ground, forms a picturesque group well-known from the early 19th century through depictions by artists and writers like Coleridge and Dorothy Wordsworth. The beauty of the landscape, with the bridge being a crucial element, remains a significant draw for tourists and contributes to the scenic character of the area south of Killin. The bridge is valued both as a feat of engineering and for its contribution to the landscape.
