Description

Glengarry is a house probably dating from the later 18th century, situated within a terraced group of three houses on Main Street, Killin. It is part of a group of some of the oldest two-storey buildings in the village and is part of a larger group of buildings of group value that includes the Masonic Lodge, White House and Manse Brae, Breadalbane Cottage, Birchbank, Ashlea, and Upper Ashlea. The house makes a significant contribution to the streetscape, being set back from the road, a characteristic unusual in Killin but shared with Birchbank and Ashlea.

Glengarry is a two-storey, five-bay, white-painted rubble stone house. It features a projecting entrance gable, a distinctive arched pend entrance providing rear access with timber doors, and a single-storey and attic projecting wing at the rear. The east-facing street elevation has a single bay to the left, followed by an off-centre two-bay projecting gable with a stack and timber door. To the right are two bays, the outermost being the arched pend. Ridge stacks are shared with the adjoining properties.

The interior was gutted and modernised in the past. The house has non-traditional replacement plastic tilt and turn windows with a false astragal pattern, and a graded slate roof. A low curved rubble wall faces the street.

Glengarry was part of the Breadalbane Estate until the 1920s and may have been constructed to house estate workers. Local information suggests a bakery once operated at the rear, accessed via the pend. Ordnance Survey maps from 1859-64 provide further details, as do publications, including "The Buildings of Scotland - Stirling and Central Scotland" (2002), page 553.
