Description

Balintober Cottage is a later 19th century estate cottage, built between 1860 and 1880, possibly designed by Daniel Gibson. This two-storey, T-plan building is in the Tudor style and features a half-timbered overhanging first floor, with prominent overhanging gables and eaves. The ground floor is constructed from tooled, squared, and coursed granite, while the upper floor has a reeded timber frame with rendered infill panels on projecting timber joists. A timber-framed porch with diagonal boarding infill adds to its character.

On the principal elevation, the cottage has a three-bay layout with a central projecting gabled timber porch. The doorway is located at the south re-entrant angle, flanked by tripartite windows. A gabled four-light window at the centre of the first floor breaks the eaves. The windows throughout the building are plate glass sash and case timber windows with timber mullions and transoms, along with top-hopper timber windows in the porch and casement timber windows on the north elevation of the extension. The doors are boarded timber. The roofs are covered with grey slates and feature lead flashings, while a cross axial tooled, squared, coursed, and corniced ridge stack with octagonal clay cans is present on the outshot. The cottage also has cast-iron rhones and rhone pipes, along with a uPVC waste pipe.

Access to the interior was not obtained at the time of the survey in 2006.
