Description
Auchtavan Cottage is a traditional single-storey cottage likely built in the late 18th to early 19th century, with possible extensions. It features a cruck frame that is pegged and jointed, and it has a heather thatched roof covered with corrugated iron. The cottage has a rare 'hinging lum' and retains remnants of a loft floor and a wall cupboard. The exterior is constructed with alternating broad and narrow rubble courses, complemented by large squared rubble quoins.
On the south elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a doorway located to the right of the centre, with a small window to the right and another doorway to the left. The outer right side shows remains of a timber lum at the roof ridge. The west elevation features a small window opening in the gable head.
The corrugated iron roof covers thick insulating layers of heather and turf thatch or sodding. Inside, the cottage has jointed and pegged crucks that are set into the walls and extend above ground, supporting purlins and cabers. The east gable contains an open hearth beneath a fine timber 'hinging lum', which is made of vertical boards on the front and sides, with a stone wall at the back. There is also a small boarded timber cupboard built into the wall just east of the door, and a boarded loft floor supported by a central pillar at the west end.
