Description

Sunnybrae Cottage, located at 156 Atholl Road in Pitlochry, dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and incorporates earlier materials. The cottage is a single-storey, three-bay structure with a rectangular plan, featuring a cruck frame and a corrugated-iron roof, beneath which thatch is preserved. The exterior is made of mortared, round-angular rubble that is part-harled and whitewashed, with flatter angular quarried stone at the gable ends.

The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical, with a part-glazed timber door at the center and windows on either side. The southeast elevation, facing Larchwood Road, presents a plain gabled façade. The northwest elevation also features a plain gable with a small blocked window to the right.

The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing. There is a limewashed rubble chimneystack on the west side and a brick chimneystack on the east. The bargeboarding is plain, and the corrugated-iron roof covers the thatch, which consists of various materials including cereal straw, light grey clay, grassy turves laid grass side down, rye straw, and broom twigs. The roof is supported by cabers made of small-diameter pine and birch, with hanging lum framework timbers above the west gable.

Inside, the east gable features a corbel stone in a recess behind a later chimney, which would have supported the ridge tree before the ridge height was raised. The west gable has a small brick-blocked window to the south. The roof is supported by two crucks, each consisting of two parts, with the upper blade fixed to the lower upright just above the level of the current ceiling joists.
