Description
Wester Auchraw is a cottage located on Auchraw Terrace in Lochearnhead, likely built in the late 18th century with later additions and alterations. This single-storey, three-bay cottage features a cruck frame and a corrugated iron roof, with lower ranges attached to each gable. Although cruck-framed cottages were once common, very few remain in their original condition, making this an unusually well-preserved example.
The main section of the house has a central door flanked by a small window on each side. The cruck roof consists of two central crucks spaced three meters apart, with distinctive serpentine braces curving around three ridge poles. Paired tree purlins support closely laid branches that hold the thatch. There is evidence of a hanging lum on the east side. To the west gable, there is an early 20th century byre range with a cobbled floor, part of which has been incorporated into the cottage. The garage at the west end is constructed from a former bothy and includes a small fireplace.
A small wing attached to the east gable features a mid-20th century window opening. The building materials include rendered random rubble with boulder footings, a timber cruck frame, a 20th century half-glazed timber-boarded front door, plate glass windows in timber casements, and a rendered chimney stack topped with a squat red clay can.
