Description

Brandon Tower is a three-storey and attic tenement built by Peat and Duncan of Hamilton between 1878 and 1879, designed in the French Renaissance style. It occupies a wide corner site and features polished ashlar stonework, mostly channelled at the first floor, with modern shops at the ground level. The building includes some sculptured ornamentation, particularly at the eaves, and has mainly round-headed windows on the second floor, along with pedimented wallhead dormers.

The symmetrical elevation facing Quarry Street has three pilastered bays, with a two-storey shallow canted window centrally located above the ground floor. This window is topped by a fishscale slated dome, which features scalloped flashings and iron cresting, and is set back behind a pair of wallhead stacks flanking the attic window. The outer bays contain paired windows. The building has five bays (two plus three) on Brandon Street and three bays (two plus one) on Lamb Street, with plainer detailing on the bays nearest the west side. The windows are either sashes or casements, and there are end and wallhead stacks. The design includes a cornice, a low parapet pierced by attic windows, and a slated French roof with a leaded platform.
