Description
The gates and gate piers at Wellington Square in Ayr date from the late 19th century. They feature polygonal painted iron gate piers, with only a single pier remaining to the north and south. The gates are two-leaf, but only one leaf remains on the north and south elevations. Designed by Gordon and Winter of Ayr, the gate piers have a polygonal plan with a panelled body, a wreath frieze, and circular finials on coned caps. The central gate band has X-bracing, and the upper section includes finials with Y-tracery. The site is surrounded by low coped boundary walls, which were previously topped with railings. There is also a plaque on a piend-roofed box adjacent to the south entrance that reads "Ayrshire Electricity Board."
