Description
4 Barns Street, Ayr
An early 19th-century two-storey and attic house with three bays, forming part of a terrace. The building is rendered with an eaves course, cornice, and blocking course. Openings are picked out with painted margins.
The south-facing entrance elevation features a central cavetto splayed doorpiece with steps leading to a timber door topped by a letterbox fanlight. A single window is aligned above at first floor, with flanking single windows at ground and first floor levels. Two piended dormers project from the outer left and right at attic level. A low timber entrance door is positioned to the outer right.
The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slate with stone skews and coped stacks; circular rainwater cans are fitted. The interior was not inspected in 1998. The north side of Barns Street formed Ayr's first regular terrace development, and this building is part of a group (Nos 1–29, excluding Nos 13, 30, and 32 Fullarton Street).
