Description
1 and 3 Sandgate in Ayr is a three-storey and attic, four-bay tenement building with commercial premises on the ground floor, designed by Thomas King and rebuilt in 1829. The exterior features painted ashlar with rubble on the sides. It has a base course, a cornice above the ground floor shopfront, a cill course at the first floor, an eaves course, and a blocking course. Ionic pilasters separate the bays at the ground floor. The windows on the first and second floors have architraved margins and pendant cill blocks, with cornices only on the first-floor windows.
The northwest entrance elevation includes a central entrance with a two-leaf timber door, flanked by shop windows. To the outer left is a timber door with a rectilinear-patterned letterbox fanlight, and there is another timber door to the outer right. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, while the attic features two canted dormers at the outer right and left.
The ground floor has shop windows, and the second floor has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The first floor has 6-pane upper sashes, the attic has 8-pane upper sashes, and the canted sides have 4-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring stone skews, corniced end stacks, and circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1998.
