Description
2-4 Sandgate in Ayr is an early 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay plain classical tenement with commercial premises on the ground floor. The entrance elevation features painted ashlar, while the side is made of coursed sandstone, partly painted. The building has a cornice above the shopfronts, cill courses at the upper floors, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows have architraved surrounds, with cornices on the first floor.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a central entrance to a shop on the right, which has a modern aluminium glazed door and a letterbox fanlight, flanked by shop windows. To the left, there is another entrance to a shop, also with a modern aluminium glazed door, a letterbox fanlight, and a shop window on the outer left. The upper floors have regular fenestration.
The northeast (Academy Street) elevation has two bays. There is a recessed entrance on the outer right with a timber door and a painted letterbox fanlight, with single windows aligned above on the first and second floors. The ground floor has a single window in the center, with smaller single windows aligned above on the first and second floors.
The ground floor features shop windows, while the upper floors predominantly have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring stone skews, coped gablehead stacks, and circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1998.
