Description
Monument Cottage, located in Alloway, Ayr, was designed by J McDerment and built between 1868 and 1869. This single-storey, three-bay cottage has a rectangular plan and features a classical style with a pedimented entrance porch supported by Corinthian columns. The entrance elevation is constructed from squared, rock-faced sandstone and includes a base course, a wreathed frieze, dentils at the blocking course, and margins around the window openings.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a square-headed opening leading to the entrance porch, which contains a glazed timber door and a letterbox fanlight, flanked by single windows. The south elevation has a gabled design with a lean-to conservatory at the ground floor. The east elevation was not visible in 1999, while the north elevation is gabled and blank.
The cottage features four-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof with a rooflight, stone skews, and dentilled, corniced gablehead stacks with polygonal cans. It also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
The property includes gates, gatepiers, railings, a drinking fountain, and a boundary wall. There is a two-leaf iron gate to the left, square-plan gatepiers topped with ball finials, and decorative iron railings on top of the boundary wall that encloses the site. A drinking fountain is set into the wall on the right.
