Description

Alloway Parish Church, dating to 1858 and designed by Campbell Douglas, with alterations in 1890 by J MacVicar Anderson and subsequent modifications, is a near rectangular Gothic church with transepts, situated on a corner plot. The church is constructed of tooled squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, and features a base course.

The west (principal) elevation showcases a traceried and hoodmoulded window with sculpted-head label stops. This window comprises seven lights beneath a sphere triangle of tracery, incorporating an inverted Y design with two conventional windows radiating from a central hexagon. Flanking angle buttresses rise to pinnacles, and a corbelled bellcote features a quatrefoil opening. A cross finial tops the gable.

The south (entrance) elevation has two arched nave windows to the left, separated by a buttress. An arched porch provides access via a two-leaf timber door, set on a mosaic tiled floor, with sculpted-head label stops. A quatrefoil is positioned on the gable, and a circular cross finial sits at the apex. Single arched windows are present on the returns, alongside a single nave window to the right. A three-light window decorates the transept, with a single window visible on the return to the left. Steps lead to the entrance to the left, and a two-leaf timber door is present. To the right, a central canted face features a cross finial, flanked by single windows, and further single windows are arranged along the outer right side.

The east (rear) elevation displays five single windows to the left, a timber door and letterbox fanlight centrally, a single arched window adjacent, and a traceried east window. Flanking buttresses are present, and an advanced inner timber opening is visible to the right of the gable. Two shouldered windows are located on the outer right.

The north (side) elevation presents four arched window openings to the nave, separated by buttresses. A three-light window serves the transept, with single windows on the returns. Two shouldered entrances with timber doors are located on the left, and a trefoil window is positioned above the right-hand door. Single windows punctuate all faces of an advanced canted section on the outer left.

The church interior is notable for its large stained glass windows on the east and west elevations; the western window's quatrefoil opening is set within a stone surround. The main roof is an arched brace collar timber structure, supported by moulded stone corbels. Other interior features include timber pews, dado panelling, an organ frame, a pulpit, arched timber-panelled roofing over the altar, and a stone font. Stained glass windows include works by J & J Keir (1880), Clayton & Bell (1891), and Christopher Whall (1922). The roof is covered in slate, with stone skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods are attached.

The churchyard contains predominantly 19th and 20th century headstones.

Gatepiers of square plan, with pyramid copes (trefoils within), are located to the left and right of the Alloway elevation. A lamp is present at the left gatepier only. Two-leaf iron gates provide access, with a single iron gate to the north elevation. Decorative railings top a low coped boundary wall along Alloway, while a higher boundary wall encloses the rest of the site.
