Description
Doonside Lodge, located on High Maybole Road in Ayr, is a single-storey, three-bay estate lodge designed in a Jacobean style, built around 1890 by architect J MacVicar Anderson and executed by Allan Stevenson. The building features coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings and has bracketed eaves.
The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, includes a square-headed entrance on the right with a timber door, a single window to the right of the entrance, and another window in a recessed bay on the outer right. To the left, there is a canted bay with a cavetto-corbelled, kneelered gable, a square panel on the gable, a finial at the apex, and a transomed and mullioned window.
The northwest elevation is asymmetrical and consists of two bays. It features a cavetto-corbelled, kneelered gabled five-light canted bay on the left with a square panel on the gable, and a recessed bay with a bipartite window in the flanking bay to the right.
The southwest elevation is also asymmetrical, comprising three bays. It has a bipartite window in the bay to the right and two recessed bays to the left, each with a window.
The lodge has timber windows and a slate roof, with a central feature of four octagonal-stacked corniced shafts and circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.
The interior was not seen in 1999.
Additionally, the property includes gatepiers and gates, with paired octagonal-plan gatepiers topped with ball finials, a single pedestrian gate, and two-leaf vehicular gates. There are railings atop a coped boundary wall, which also features fleur-de-lis finials.
