Description

Dean Castle Lodge, located in the Dean Castle Estate on Dean Road in Kilmarnock, was designed by Ingram & Brown in 1910. This one-and-a-half storey lodge features an L-plan layout with a single-storey wing at the rear. The exterior is constructed from coursed rock-faced ashlar stone, accented with polished ashlar dressings, and is topped with crowstepped gables that have beaked skewputts.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a central entrance doorway framed by an architraved surround, which includes a blind plaque and a hoodmould. To the left of the entrance, a window sits on the ground floor, featuring a projecting lintel course and a hoodmould that supports a stone wallhead dormer above. This dormer has a shield at the gablehead and is topped with a stone ball finial. To the right of the door, a projecting crowstepped gable end contains a single bay on the ground floor, with a window above it at the upper storey, and an arrowslit at the gablehead.

The southwest elevation has a central projecting crowstepped gable end with two bays on the ground floor, a string course, and a projecting corbelled stack above. This elevation also includes an enclosing wall that adjoins to the left on the ground floor.

On the northwest (rear) elevation, there is a window to the right on the ground floor, with a wallhead dormer above it at the upper storey. A single-storey extension in the middle features a window and a door on the right return.

The northeast elevation is a blind wall with a gable to the right that has a window on both storeys.

The lodge retains original 7-pane timber sash and case windows, which consist of a 6-pane upper sash and a single pane lower sash, as indicated in the original plans. The roof is piended and covered with grey slate, featuring lead flashings and valleys. The rainwater goods are painted cast iron with decorative hoppers.

Inside, the lodge preserves many original timber features, including skirting boards and doors, and the original room layout remains intact as per the original plans.

The boundary walls are made of coursed rubble with plain rectangular copes and higher pillars that are infilled with later wrought-iron rectangular railings. The entrance features short wing walls containing a pair of high round gatepiers with a projecting neck course and round cushion caps, leading to the vehicular entrance, along with a slightly shorter pillar on the left that forms a pedestrian access.
